Commanche Falls continued their impressive rise through the ranks by winning the Unibet Stewards’ Cup at Goodwood.
Trained by Michael Dods, who excels with sprinters, the four-year-old has made giant strides this season.
Winner at Ayr in April with just 84 points, he also won at Ripon before winning the Scottish Stewards’ Cup last time.
This win earned him a 6-pound penalty – but as the handicapper only saw fit to lift him by 5 pounds for this narrow win, he was effectively running from 1 pound of hurt to weights.
Usually in such a competitive race it could be crucial, but Commanche Falls (10-1) is clearly improving at a rate of knots again.
He initially appeared to be on the wrong side of the track as Major Jumbo took the lead on the other side.
With a furlong to go, the two groups looked neck-and-neck, but Connor Beasley had only bided his time and Commanche Falls escaped to win by a quick finishing Gulliver neck. Great Ambassador was third, with Total Commitment in fourth.
