Tulsa vs. Mississippi State

Normally 3 wins wouldn’t get a team into a bowling game, but Mike Leach’s Mississippi State team found their way into the playoffs at 3-7 nonetheless. Will Rodgers was an effective quarterback for the Bulldogs after benching KJ Costello, but Tulsa’s pass defense in one of the best units in the country allowed just 194.0 passing yards. match. Tulsa’s only two losses this year came against ranked teams.

West Virginia vs. Army

West Virginia was initially scheduled to face Tennessee, while an Army team of nine wins were forced to stay at home. Luckily for the Black Knights, the Volunteers had issues with COVID, and West Virginia needed an adversary. The Mountaineers finished 5-4 and have a top-10 pass defense, but that’s probably a moot point as the military rarely throws the ball.

San Jose State vs. Ball State

22nd State San Jose (7-0) experienced a major turnaround under coach Brent Brennan. The Spartans were an 8-29 combined in his first three seasons before ending this year unbeaten with a Mountain West title. Ball State (6-1) had an equally impressive result, scoring six straight wins to end the season, including a 38-28 upset against Buffalo in the MAC Championship game.

TCU vs. Arkansas

Arkansas (3-7) are their third head coach since the Razorbacks last won a bowl game in 2016, but Sam Pittman far exceeded expectations in his inaugural season. Former Florida quarterback Feleipe Franks has had an equally impressive season after being replaced by Kyle Trask with the Gators. Franks completed an Arkansas record 68.5 percent of assists. TCU (6-4) had a season of ups and downs beating Texas, but also lost by three points to West Virginia.
