Substitute Isaac Fletcher grabbed the winner as Hartlepool came from behind to claim a 2-1 victory at struggling Colchester.
The U’s took the lead in the 22nd minute through Noah Chilvers, who celebrated his 21st birthday by scoring from close range after John Kinde’s shot was parried by Ben Killip.
Cameron Coxe’s shot returned to the post in the 33rd minute for the hosts after running over Akinde’s pass.
Colchester goalkeeper Sam Hornby then got past Luke Molyneux, before Freddie Sears’ effort hit a post in the opening minute of the second half.
Omar Bogle’s deflected shot hit the crossbar and Hornby then knocked down Tom Crawford’s header effort.
But Hartlepool equalized in the 70th minute when Bogle fired a fine shot from the edge of the box after Joe White ran towards goal and set it up.
And they grabbed a winner four minutes later through Fletcher, who stabbed from close range after Bogle burst into the Colchester area and the home defense failed to clear properly.
