After one of his seven double faults, Gauff smashed his racket against the ground three times. The racket didn’t stand a chance.
At 17, Gauff was the youngest woman to reach a Roland Garros quarter-final since 2006 and the youngest American to do so since 1997. The tennis player has been on the cusp of becoming a big star in recent years. In 2019, she upset Venus Williams in the first round at Wimbledon and qualified for the fourth round. In 2020, she surprised defending champion Naomi Osaka in the third round of the Australian Open.
But on Wednesday she wasted a 3-0 lead in the first set, then let off steam with her racquet in the second.
“After the game my hitting partner told me that this game would probably make me a champion in the future, and I really believe it,” Gauff told USA Today.
