Clearwater salon turns hair clippings into new products like dog beds

CLEARWATER, Fla. — Customers entering Alexea Burrell’s private hair studio, Whole Hearted Salon, in Clearwater are immediately greeted with warmth.

From the inspirational phrases that line its walls to the plants that hang from its shelves, Burrell has always been environmentally conscious. That vibe is spreading beyond her studio as she has partnered with New York-based company Green Circle.

The eco-friendly company collects used hair and products and reuses them to reduce our carbon footprint.

“In the hair world, we have so much waste product, hair. Everything we use, even the products and their containers, can be recycled,” Burrell said.

Green Circle reports that 877 pounds of beauty waste is generated every minute in the United States and Canada.

“Anything that’s used, even up to foiling anything that can technically be thrown away, is actually just recycled and reused,” Burrell said.

Once processed into the hair, the sheets can be used for car and bicycle parts.

The extra hair color used by Burrell, who is vegan, can be broken down. The water is separated and can then be used in sprinklers.

As for all the collected hair, it has various new uses. Burrell said it can be repurposed and made into dog beds for shelters or even recycled bins that are then sent back to salons to collect more produce and hair.

Green Circle collects waste and brings it to their warehouse where they turn unwanted items into pellets which can then be reused and recycled.

“It’s really interesting that they’re finding ways to go back and create less waste and reuse,” said Amanda Wilson, convinced of their efforts.

Wilson used to donate his hair, but now finds a new way to help others and the environment.

As for the cost, it costs about $200 each time the garbage is picked up. Burrell said that breaks down to about three dollars that are passed on to the customer.

A small sum for a great mission.
