Claims and counterclaims – latest updates – POLITICO

With 16 days to go before the general election, the campaign is now turning into an ugly series of claims and counterclaims as Labor touts its economic strengths and the Conservatives desperately try to sow doubt about its tax plans.

Here’s what to watch today:

  • Keir Starmer faces a rare Q&A session with real voters this morning, joining combative breakfast host Nick Ferrari in the LBC Radio studios from 9am.
  • It’s a great day for the Scottish Labor Party. Leader Anas Sarwar unveils his manifesto for north of the border voters in Edinburgh from 10.30am
  • Hundreds of Reform UK supporters – and quite possibly a few detractors – are expected in Clacton this evening for a “meet Nigel Farage”. Farage was buoyed by a second poll which placed his party’s support close to that of the Conservatives.
  • POLITICO’s Esther Webber reports that moderate conservatives are positioning themselves for possible leadership bids, with Security Minister Tom Tugendhat and Health Secretary Victoria Atkins among those tipped as contenders.
  • Channel 4 is hosting a seven-way debate on immigration, law and order at 6.30pm with Conservative Chris Philp, Labour’s Nick Thomas-Symonds, SNP’s Keith Brown, Carla Denyer Green, Lib Dem’s Daisy Cooper, Rhun ap Iorwerth of Plaid Cymru and Reform UK. Richard Tice.
