Belgium showed their respect to Eriksen, who wears the number 10 jersey, by stopping play and giving him a round of applause.

Ahead of the game Belgium boss Roberto Martinez said: “As you can imagine the uncertainty we had when the incident happened, it was a really tough time, a tough time for any player watching the game, a difficult time for the players who shared boxes with Christian.

“Then from that point on, once you get the good news that Christian reacted positively, that he was speaking, that he was in the hospital, now it’s almost a party.

“You’re going to have a crowd at full capacity – this is a celebration in football and for Christian.”

In the meantime, it has been confirmed that Eriksen will be fitted with a defibrillator implant.

Providing an update on his status on Thursday, Danish team doctor Morten Boesen said: “After Christian underwent various heart exams it was decided that he should have an ICD (cardiac starter).

“This device is needed after a heart attack due to arrhythmias.

“Christian accepted the solution and the plan has been confirmed by national and international specialists who all recommend the same treatment.

“We encourage everyone to give Christian and his family peace and privacy (in) the next time.”
