Christian Eriksen ‘surprised’ how good his body feels ahead of Brentford debut

VS

hristian Eriksen says he has been surprised at how fit he feels as the midfielder prepares for his competitive debut at Brentford.

The Denmark international, who is preparing for his first professional appearance since suffering a cardiac arrest on the pitch at Euro 2020 last year, has featured in two friendlies since joining the Bees on a contract short term in January.

Eriksen played 60 minutes against Southend United last week before completing nearly 80 minutes against a Rangers XI on Monday, registering two assists.

“The minutes are getting longer and longer,” Eriksen said. “I feel like I’m in a good place mentally for the games and physically, which is the most important thing at the moment.

“Actually, I’m a bit surprised that my body is acting the way it does. Of course, I trained hard, but I didn’t expect it to be as good as I feel now. That’s so definitely something very positive.”

The former Tottenham and Inter Milan midfielder has three assists in two friendlies but is ready to put himself to the test in the Premier League, potentially starting at home against Newcastle this weekend.

“I have to keep it up,” Eriksen said. “It was a friendly game, so let’s see if that happens in the other big games. Of course, it’s just set pieces, so that has to change a bit.

“I’m very happy to be there. It’s what I’ve been waiting for for many months and finally being there with a team is very nice and heartwarming.”

On his first competitive start, Eriksen added: “It’s getting more and more real. Stepping onto the pitch is something I still can’t really imagine what it would feel like. But I can’t wait to get there. .”

Brentford are winless in their last eight matches in all competitions.
