Former NFL quarterback and current NFL analyst Chris Simms has made waves in the past for his rankings and annual NFL Draft quarterback breakdowns. This year’s edition was published on March 3 in “PFT Live,” and featured several surprising picks – most notably, Trevor Lawrence’s “generational” talent isn’t No. 1, and neither is Justin Fields of the. ‘Ohio State. Rather, it’s BYU passer-by Zach Wilson.
Here’s Simms’ standings for this year’s draft round:
- Zach Wilson, BYU
- Trevor Lawrence, Clemson
- Mac Jones, Alabama
- Kellen Mond, Texas A&M
- Justin Fields, Ohio State
- Trey Lance, State of North Dakota
Florida quarterback Kyle Trask, who some also consider a first-round talent, slips out of the top six.

Simms ranked Wilson as an elite passer, saying he was the top pure passer and a draft “superstar” with good athleticism and a positive release. Simms thinks Lawrence has things he needs to work on, especially in the mechanics department. Simms says Wilson is “clearly the No. 1 quarterback in the draft,” the only downside being his size.
At No.3, Jones is also an intriguing selection. Simms believes Jones’s arm may not be as strong as the other counterparts in this draft, but he’s still physically talented, can throw all the shots and move well in the pocket.
Surprisingly (shockingly?), Simms got Texas A&M QB Kellen Mond a spot ahead of Justin Fields of Ohio State, with Fields dropping to No. 5. Simms credits Mond with a very precise sound and mechanical sound.
While Simms believes Fields is a better prospect than former first-round pick Dwayne Haskins exiting Ohio State, mechanical issues and questions about his role in a single-read offense knock him down in the ranking. He also cited several poor performances last season as the reason for the drop.
Fields went through the ringer in the pre-draft process, although many believe he is the de facto QB2 in this year’s draft behind Clemson’s Lawrence. Wilson’s bumper season in 2020 with BYU propelled him straight into the QB2 discussion.
For comparison, Simms’ 2020 Draft standings:
- Joe Burrow (selected n ° 1 overall)
- Justin Herbert (selected # 6 overall)
- Jordan Love (selected 26th overall)
- Tua Tagovailoa (selected n ° 5 in the general classification)
- Jacob Eason (selected 122nd overall)
The former NFL quarterback says he believes his six quarterbacks are legitimate first-round talent and could see them all taken in the first round this year.
