Chris Kongo says topping Conor Benn against Sebastian Formella would be a major statement | boxing news

Chris Kongo says a knockout victory over Sebastian Formella, who resisted the power of Conor Benn, would send shockwaves through the welterweight division.

Londoner Kongo will face Germany’s Formella at the OVO Arena, Wembley on June 11 in Richard Riakporhe’s IBF heavyweight title eliminator card against Fabio Turchi, live on Sky Sports.

Formella (23-2) only lost to Benn and former world champion Shawn Porter, both unable to stop the German from a distance, but the boxer from Bermondsey is determined to show off his sharp skills, as well as his concussive punches.

“That would be 100% a big statement,” Kongo said. Sky Sports News.

“I watched the fight with Conor Benn and I watched the Porter fight. He actually pushed Conor Benn, he hit him with good shots, but Benn came back and he was winning against me.”

Kongo will be making his second appearance since signing a promotional deal with BOXXER, having returned from a year out of the ring to produce a dominating victory over Kelvin Dotel at Wembley Arena in March.

The 29-year-old believes a win over Formella will put him on track to challenge some of the biggest names in the division.

“It would take me up a notch in the rankings, to take me up to the world level,” Kongo added.

“I really want to continue the activity, but I’m not far (at world level), I would say that. As long as I can stay active and fit and there is no injury, I want to go fast .”
