China ‘overreacted’ to Pelosi visit, US expert says

China ‘overreacted’ to US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s recent visit to Taiwan and used it to escalate tensions in the Taiwan Strait, US Indo Coordinator says – Pacific Kurt Campbell.

“China has overreacted and its actions continue to be provocative, destabilizing and unprecedented,” Campbell told reporters on a call Friday. He described the week-long Chinese military exercises as an “intensified pressure campaign” against Taiwan, a self-governing island that China claims as a “separatist province”.

“It’s not over and we expect it to continue to unfold in the weeks and months to come,” Campbell said. He added that several Chinese warships remain near Taiwan.

Meanwhile, Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen insisted earlier in the week that China is still showing strength, although some of Beijing’s major military drills appear to be running out of steam.

Kurt Campbell predicts that China will continue its hunting exercises along the Taiwan Strait.

Campbell said the United States would continue standard air and sea transits across the Taiwan Strait and announce an “ambitious roadmap” for trade negotiations with Taiwan in the very near future.
