Prague should stop sending wrong signals to separatist forces on the island, warns Beijing
The Czech Republic is damaging its ties with Beijing and violating China’s sovereignty by sending an official delegation to Taiwan, the Chinese Embassy in Prague has said.
beijing “strongly opposes” the visit as “Taiwan is an inalienable part of Chinese territory,” the embassy said in a statement on Sunday.
A group of Czech officials and businessmen, led by prominent Senator Jiri Drahos, are expected to arrive on the self-governing island, which has never officially declared independence from China, later today.
The Prague movement is “a serious violation of China’s national sovereignty and territorial integrity”, who inflicts “serious damage” on relations between China and the Czech Republic, the statement read.
The Chinese Embassy urged the Czech Republic to “uphold its official commitment to the one-China policy and immediately stop sending the wrong signals to the separatist ‘Taiwan independence’ forces.”
Drahos told Taiwanese media a few days ago that he is looking forward to strengthening cooperation between the Czech Republic and Taiwan in epidemic prevention, semiconductors, museums and other fields.
Referring to tensions on the island since the visit of US House of Representatives Speaker Nancy Pelosi last month, the senator insisted that China should know that the democratic world stands with it. from Taiwan.
He added that European countries would not send arms to Taipei, but there is a consensus among them to strengthen relations with the island in soft power areas, including culture and science, in order to improve its international visibility.
As for the prospect of a military conflict in Taiwan similar to the one currently unfolding between Russia and Ukraine, Drahos suggested that the Chinese authorities “relatively pragmatic” and would not use force to bring the island back under his control.
