Children’s gender clinic founder consulted for puberty blocking companies

The co-founder and director of a clinic that helps children change gender, Dr. Stephen Rosenthal, received money as a consultant from two pharmaceutical companies who are both under investigation for advertising on puberty blockers.

Rosenthal is the co-founder and medical director from the Gender Center for Children and Adolescents at Benioff Children’s Hospital, University of California, San Francisco.

He received $38,704 from pharmaceutical companies between 2015 and 2021, more than 98% of American endocrinologists did, according to a report from Care Dash, a site that uses public records to track the money doctors have received in compensation from pharmaceutical companies.

Of this amount, $16,765 came from Endo Pharmaceuticals and AbbVie; the payouts were directly tied to their Suprelin LA and Lupron products, both of which are used off-label as puberty blockers for children trying to change gender. Public records reveal that Rosenthal accepted consulting fees from AbbVie and Endo Pharmaceuticals.

In 2018, Rosenthal received the third-highest amount of any US physician in Suprelin LA-related compensation, ProPublica reported.

Rosenthal is also affiliated with the Endocrine Society and was previously president of the Pediatric Endocrine Society, which, according to Breitbart News, received over $125,000 of AbbVie between 2017 and 2021. The Pediatric Endocrine Society has promoted Suprelin LA and Lupron.

He was also a vocal lawyer for a medical approach that he describes as “gender-affirming care”, which involves helping children in their attempts to change their sex.

Endo Pharmaceuticals and AbbVie are currently under investigation by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. The two companies reportedly promoted and advertised puberty blockers “for unapproved uses without disclosing the potential risks associated with these drugs for children and their parents.”

The FDA recently warned that Lupron, produced by AbbVie, and Suprelin LA, produced by Endo Pharmaceuticals, can cause brain swelling and permanent vision loss.

Lupron can cost nearly $2,000 for just a month’s supply, and the drug has been used to chemically castrate sex offenders.

The Child and Adolescent Gender Center at Benioff Children’s Hospital, University of California “provides comprehensive medical and psychological care, as well as legal counsel and support, to transgender, non-binary, and gender-broad children” , according to his the description. The center sees patients as young as three years old and offers both puberty blockers and the administration of cross-sex hormone therapy.

A report from ProPublica found that doctors prescribe a drug more often when they have received payments from pharmaceutical companies, especially when those payments are tied to a specific drug.

“Physicians who receive money from drug makers tied to a specific drug prescribe that drug more heavily than doctors without such financial ties,” ProPublica noted.

The report specifically found that “On average, for all drugs, providers who received payments specifically tied to a drug prescribed it 58% more than providers who did not receive payments.”

Breitbart News reported that Dr. Jeremi Carswell, Director of the Division of Gender Services at Boston Children’s Hospital, also received compensation from Endo Pharmaceuticals.

Endo Pharmaceuticals is currently in the process of bankruptcy filing and is involved in thousands of lawsuits related to the opioid epidemic.

Neither Dr. Stephen M. Rosenthal nor the The Child and Adolescent Gender Center at Benioff Children’s Hospital, University of California, San Francisco responded to requests for comment.
