Children, 5 and 10, hit and killed while walking to elementary school in Maryland
BALTIMORE — Two children died after being struck by a vehicle Monday morning while walking to school in Riverdale Park, Maryland, police said.
Officers responded at 8 a.m. to the crash at Riverdale Road and Taylor Road, outside Riverdale Elementary School, where children aged five and ten and a man were struck in a crossing for pedestrians.
The children were rushed to an area hospital, where they died, police said. The man suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
The crash happened at the intersection of Riverdale and Taylor roads, Prince George’s County police said, near the school.
Police said a woman in a pickup truck was driving south on Taylor Road toward Riverdale Road. She struck the three people as she was turning left onto Riverdale Road, police said. The driver remained on scene.
Riverdale Park Mayor Alan Thompson called the incident a tragedy in a social media post and said Gov. Wes Moore called him to convey his condolences to the children’s families.
The crash remains under investigation and no criminal charges have been announced.
