A child was killed and four other people were injured in a shooting that broke out Sunday evening between two strangers at a Texas flea market, police said.

Officers responded to a call of shots fired at Cole’s Antique Village and Flea Market in Pearland — about 17 miles south of Houston — at 5:34 p.m., local police posted on X, formerly known under the name Twitter. The victims were transported to hospital, where one of them, a minor, died.

Another minor was among the injured, police said.

The shooting occurred after an argument between two people who did not know each other, Pearland Police Officer Chad Rogers said at an evening news conference. The two people ended up exchanging gunfire inside the market, police said.

A suspect was still at large, police said. They did not immediately provide details about the second shooter.

There have been more than 600 mass shootings in the United States so far this year as of Monday morning, according to the Gun Violence Archive. That’s almost two per day.

Nonpartisan records define a mass shooting as one in which four or more victims are killed or injured.

Texas has some of the most lax gun laws in the United States, although the state has seen some of the deadliest mass shootings in the country. Two mass shootings in 2019 at a Walmart store in El Paso as well as in Midland and Odessa killed 30 people.

Meanwhile, a shooting at an elementary school in Uvalde last year and another at an Allen shopping center in May killed a combined 29 people.
