Chicago mass shooting leaves 8-year-old girl dead, 10 others injured

Chicago police believe gang-related violence led to the fatal shooting of an 8-year-old girl that also left 10 others injured Saturday night on the city’s South Side.

Police say the shooting happened near 52nd Street and South Damen Ave. around 9:18 p.m. An 8-year-old girl was shot in the head, while two boys – aged 1 and 7 – were seriously injured after being shot several times.

Deputy Police Chief Don Jerome said police assisted in response efforts for the other eight victims, aged 19 to 40, by applying tourniquets and chest seals.

The victims were outside during a family gathering. A statement released by Chicago police said a witness saw a black sedan approaching the scene when shots rang out through the crowd. All victims were escorted to local area hospitals by the Chicago Fire Department.

“This was not a random act of violence. It was probably gang related,” Jerome said. “Whatever the motivation for this incident, three innocent children were struck this evening and one of them tragically succumbed to his injuries. Make no mistake, the actions of the violators are horrific and unacceptable in our city.

Area One detectives are still investigating the incident and no arrests have been made.
