Chicago Fire goalie Gabriel Slonina signs with Chelsea

CHICAGO (CBS/AP) – Gabriel “Gaga” Slonina, originally from Addison, is officially a member of the top football league.

He signed with Chelsea after agreeing a $15 million transfer fee from the Fire.

The phenomenal young keeper will finish the season in Chicago before heading to the English Premier League.

“What I’m trying to grow is I’m trying to be an inspiration to all the kids, you know, in Chicago, in the suburbs — because I’m just a boy from ‘Addison, who’s going overseas and hopefully having a super-successful career there,’ Slonina said, ‘because I want to put in the work, that you can achieve really big things.

The Fires are in Charlotte looking to extend their unbeaten streak to five. Slonina has conceded only one goal in his last games.

Slonina attended US national team training camps in December and January, but did not appear in any matches. He played for the United States at several levels of the national youth team.
