Chicago Bears reject idea of renovations for Soldier Field – NBC Chicago

Bears reject Soldier Field renovations idea that originally appeared on NBC Sports Chicago

It became a messy rift between Chicago’s football team and its city.

The Chicago Bears are committed to moving to Arlington Heights to build a new stadium that will surely provide lucrative opportunities for the organization.

Yet the City of Chicago is determined to keep them at historic Soldier Field near downtown Chicago.

The city’s mayor’s committee has released an outline of the renovations it wants to make to the grounds and the museum campus that surrounds it, including a dome for the grounds.

But, bears won’t bite.

In a team statement reported by the Daily Herald, “The only potential project the Chicago Bears are exploring for a new stadium development is Arlington Park,” according to a statement from a team spokesperson via the ‘article. “As part of our mutual agreement with the seller of this property, we are not seeking any other stadium offers or sites, including renovations at Soldier Field, while we are under contract.”

The city and Mayor Lori Lightfoot worked valiantly to keep the Bears in Chicago. Starting in February, Lightfoot assembled a team to come up with a project for improvements to the stadium, which resulted in a 51-page “Where Worlds Connect” document, containing 35 recommendations for repairing the lakeside area.

However, that’s definitely not in the cards. Many of the proposals would violate ordinances created by the park district, disrupt veterans groups who reacted to the stadium’s renaming, and cost taxpayers millions, if not nearly a billion dollars.

While the field in Arlington Heights is not yet closed (expected to be late 2022 or early 2023), the Bears ended the deal by reiterating their intention to leave.

There’s still a lot to unpack as the deals close, the ground breaks and the Bears edge closer to Arlington Heights. Until then, it will be interesting to see if the city of Chicago redoubles its efforts to keep the Bears at home.
