Cherfilus-McCormick wins and will occupy representative Alcee Hastings seat

Democrat Sheila Cherfilus-McCormick won the race to represent Florida’s 20th Congressional District, occupying the seat of the late U.S. Democratic Representative Alcee Hastings and bolstering the slim Democratic majority in the House.

Miramar’s attorney and home health care business owner beat Republican Jason Mariner on Tuesday.

With 147 of 148 ridings in Palm Beach County and 144 of 150 ridings in Broward County, Cherfilus-McCormick won over 78% of the vote about an hour after the polls closed.

The seat has been vacant since longtime MP Alcee Hastings died in April at the age of 84 after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer. Cherfilus-McCormick had challenged Hastings to no avail in 2018 and 2020.
