Chelsea vs Real Madrid, Mendy, Benzema, hat trick video

One of the great goalkeeper screamers left holders Chelsea on the brink of Champions League elimination after a 3-1 loss to Real Madrid on Thursday (AEST).

Chelsea were already struggling, trailing 2-1 at half-time in the quarter-final first leg, before Edouard Mendy handed Madrid ace Karim Benzema a hat-trick as a gift at Stamford Bridge in London.

Madrid had hacked the ball aimless on the pitch and Mendy left his area to deal with what should have been an innocuous situation.

But the Senegal international hesitated and then sent a weak pass aimed at team-mate Antonio Rudiger as Benzema leapt past the mortified Chelsea fans.

“He’s good enough to have to work for goals, but when you give him such a chance it’s utter chaos,” legendary commentator Martin Tyler said on Stan Sport’s coverage.

“And that could be the deciding factor when we finish the second leg. What a waste. He can’t believe what he saw, (manager) Thomas Tuchel. Mendy reflects on a crazy moment.”

Co-commentator Alan Smith did his best to make sense of Chelsea’s calamity.

“Just not enough on the ball, trying to find Rudiger,” Smith said.

“Talk about a gift, talk about shooting yourself in the foot. He’s the last man you want to present the ball to.”
