Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Predictions
When it rains, it pours.
On the balance of play on Thursday, Chelsea were good value for at least a draw against Fulham. Still, the nice margins went against them and Graham Potter had to consider a 2-1 defeat.
The under-fire Chelsea boss must be wondering if his luck will ever turn. His side were on top form and looking to take the lead when rookie striker Joao Felix was sent off just before the hour mark.
This left the Blues facing him. Soon after, Carlos Vinicius’ header won the game for Fulham and left Potter in a precarious position.
Until recently, the powers that be at Stamford Bridge insisted they had faith in Potter’s long-term vision for the club. But another loss this weekend could force Todd Boehly’s hand.
Crystal Palace is not in great shape itself, but there is enough quality in its ranks to take advantage of what could quickly become a toxic atmosphere in west London.
It could be another frustrating afternoon for 10th-placed Chelsea.
Chelsea vs Crystal Palace Predictions
Chelsea’s confidence is high at the moment and Crystal Palace have what it takes to make this a tough game for the Blues.
Draw or Crystal Palace – 23/20 (bet365)
Nothing is going well for Chelsea at the moment. A winning streak in their last eight matches left Potter’s side 10 points behind the top four, and out of the FA Cup and EFL Cup.
The Blues are still in the Champions League – they will face Borussia Dortmund in the round of 16 – but this is set to become one of their worst seasons in two decades.
There is still time to salvage something from the 2022/23 campaign, although Chelsea are unlikely to reverse their sizable deficit in the top four.
But Chelsea rank 10th in goals scored this season and they have kept just one clean sheet in their last eight Premier League games.
With problems at both ends of the pitch, things could get worse before they get better for the Blues.
Frustration is also mounting at Selhurst Park. Patrick Vieira’s side have suffered two heavy defeats in the top flight since the World Cup, losing 3-0 to Fulham and 4-0 to Tottenham Hotspur, both at home.
Palace also lost to their own fans in the FA Cup, as Southampton won 2-1 at Selhurst last weekend.
But with Chelsea struggling, the chances of a draw or an away win are attractive.
Both teams to score – 19/20 (bet365)
After 19 games last season, Chelsea had scored 42 goals under Thomas Tuchel. To equal that tally halfway through the current campaign, they would need to find the net 21 times against Palace.
Needless to say that will not happen. Felix looked brilliant in his first 58 minutes as a Chelsea player, but his red card at Craven Cottage means the Blues will have to make do without the player who was their main attacking threat on Thursday night.
Chelsea should still have enough to score. Palace have looked defensively suspect of late, despite a 2-0 win over out-of-form Bournemouth.
Joachim Andersen and Marc Guehi are excellent centre-backs for a mid-table side, but Palace nonetheless struggled to keep opposition attacks quiet.
And despite all of Chelsea’s problems going forward, the only two home games they failed to score in were against Arsenal and Manchester City.
Likewise, however, Palace will be imagining their chances of causing trouble for a backline that has looked anything but convincing of late.
Vieira has yet to settle into a favored attacking setup, with Wilfried Zaha, Jordan Ayew, Odsonne Edouard and Jean-Philippe Mateta all deployed in the center at different times.
But with Zaha, Michael Olise and Ebere Eze all likely to start, Palace will not lack quality in the final third.
Most Second Half Goals – 21/20 (bet365)
Chelsea will be aiming to get off to a quick start here, but that’s hard to do when confidence is so low.
Palace will be content to keep things tight in the early stages. By breaking Chelsea’s rhythm and making life difficult for the home side, they will seek to destabilize the public at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea left after chanting Tuchel’s name yet again at Craven Cottage. While direct, widespread criticism of Potter is unlikely, it’s fair to say that the club and the fans aren’t fully aligned at the moment.
Chelsea have been slow to get going for most of the season. They are one of seven Premier League teams whose first-half goal return is in single digits.
Palace have scored just once after half-time away this season, but the nature of Sunday’s encounter means we are keen to score more goals after the break nonetheless.
Chelsea could get desperate as time goes on and the game is likely to get more and more drawn out later on.
