Chelsea v Lille LIVE commentary and team news: Les Bleus take on French champions in Champions League round of 16 – Mount could be back but duo doubts

Champions League holders Chelsea will host Ligue 1 champions Lille at Stamford Bridge this week for the first leg of their round of 16.

Thomas Tuchel’s Les Bleus finished second to Juventus in Group H in the group stages of Europe’s elite competition this season while Lille topped Group G.

It was a favorable draw for the Premier League giants as they avoided Bayern Munich and Real Madrid.

But the new Club World Cup champions will be keen not to make any mistakes against Lille and secure the advantage in the home and away game.

Chelsea have had a busy schedule lately and needed a last-minute winner from Hakim Ziyech to see Crystal Palace into the top flight on Saturday.

Lille, meanwhile, have been in uneven form recently, winning just twice in their last seven games in all competitions, and drew at home to Metz on Friday night.

Chelsea v Lille: team news

Mason Mount could return for Chelsea after his ankle injury if he can prove his fitness.

The England striker injured his ligaments in Chelsea’s 2-1 Club World Cup final win over Palmeiras and will need a late test.

Callum Hudson-Odoi and Cesar Azpilicueta have also had some minor issues recently and will likely be out.

Ruben Loftus-Cheek made his return from an Achilles problem this weekend and could start.

Reece James is set to return from a hamstring problem but this game will come too soon as Ben Chilwell remains a long-time absentee.

Chelsea vs Lille: who are the Lille?

French champions Lille will head to west London hoping history doesn’t repeat itself.

The teams last met in the group stage of the competition in the 2019/20 campaign, with the Blues winning 2-1 home and away.

Jocelyn Gourvennec’s side – the former midfielder replaced manager Christophe Galtier last summer – have only reached the knockout stage for the second time and the first since 2006/07, when they lost 2-0 on aggregate to Manchester United.

They currently sit 11th in Ligue 1, 23 points behind leaders Paris Saint-Germain, but emerged victorious in Group G after three successive victories after taking just two points from their opening three games.

Their ranks include former Southampton and West Ham defender Jose Fonte, the widely traveled Hatem Ben Arfa, who joined the club as a free agent in January, and star man Renato Sanches.

Chelsea v Lille: What was said?

Thomas Tuchel, Chelsea boss: “You shouldn’t think too much about how others might see us as the favorites against Lille.

“We have to accept for the moment that this is a phase where things seem a little tight and more difficult than other times. That is the situation for Tuesday’s game.

“It’s important to be realistic and not expect too much from us, and accepting games against mid-table teams can become difficult. Once we accept that, it’s the first step to feeling some freedom. and become better.

“We are confident of having a good performance as we deliver at a high level in knockout games, cup games, Champions League games. We have the fans behind us. We are going step by step and we will be ready to fight with them at an acceptable level.
