The 18-year-old son of former Chelsea midfielder Michael Ballack has tragically died in a quad bike crash, reports in Portugal say.
The Premier League club said it was “shocked and saddened” to learn that young Emilio Ballack had lost his life, apparently in an accident near the family’s holiday home near Lisbon.
The teenager was reportedly killed in the accident in the early hours of Thursday morning, around 2 a.m.
Portuguese media report that this happened in Troia, south of Lisbon, on land near a house belonging to his legendary German father.
The report claims the teenager was rescued by firefighters in the nearby town of Grandola.
Ballack reportedly bought the property on the west coast of Portugal several years ago. The retired legend recently posted photos on his Instagram page from the village of Comporta, where he and his family spent a summer vacation.
It is a tragic loss for Ballack, 44, and his family. The former midfielder is considered one of the greatest German players of all time and is fondly remembered by Chelsea fans.
Ballack spent four years at Stamford Bridge, winning one Premier League title and three FA Cups. He made 98 appearances for Die Mannschaft.
The news has yet to be confirmed by the family, but Chelsea have released a brief statement expressing their deepest sympathy for the Blues hero.
“Everyone associated with Chelsea Football Club is shocked and saddened to learn of the death of Emilio Ballack at the terribly young age of 18,” we read.
“All our thoughts are with his father Michael and his family at this sad time.”
