Chelsea set to land Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile in £33m deal as boss Graham Potter aims to ease defensive problems

Monaco defender Benoit Badiashile is set to join Chelsea in a deal worth around £33m.

The 21-year-old has impressed with the Ligue 1 side since breaking into the first team in 2018 and despite interest from Newcastle last summer, Chelsea look set to land the starlet.

Benoit Badiashile looks set to swap Monaco for Chelsea in a deal worth around £33m

Sporting report Badiashile has agreed the personal terms of a long-term contract and his medical is being planned.

The French international fits the bill for Chelsea who are looking for a left centre-back.

Initially, the Blues had set their sights on Croatian World Cup sensation Josko Gvardiol but failed to strike a deal with his club RB Leipzig.

But Badiashile offers Chelsea the opportunity to bolster their backline at a fraction of Gvardiol’s valuation.

Boss Graham Potter will welcome the arrival given his lack of options at centre-back following the departures of Andreas Cristensen and Antonio Rudiger in July.

Chelsea have successfully brought in Wesley Fofana from Leicester City but injury has hampered his start to life at Stamford Bridge while Kalidou Koulibaly is yet to show his best form since arriving in the summer.

That left Thiago Silva and 38-year-old Trevoh Chalobah at his disposal, although left-back Marc Cucurella could also be deployed in a central role.

Badiashile was an unused substitute in Monaco’s 3-2 win at Auxerre on Wednesday as Ligue 1 resumed after the World Cup break.

But he is unlikely to play a part in the Principality’s league game on Monday as he finalizes his move to west London.

The Frenchman will bring defensive solidity, aerial threat and maturity despite his young age.

His performances for Monaco earned him two caps for France in 2022 but was left out of Les Bleus’ World Cup squad.
