Chelsea push for Aubameyang, Fofana and Gordon transfers after Leeds debacle as summer spending could top £300m

The Blues have made a bid of £15m plus Marcos Alonso for Aubameyang as they remain committed to signing Wesley Fofana and Anthony Gordon.

Yesterday’s 3-0 defeat at Leeds underscored the need for more arrivals and Chelsea are now ready to step up their bid to strengthen their squad before the window closes. Aubameyang has been reluctant to leave Barcelona but Chelsea met their representatives last week in a bid to convince the former Arsenal striker to move to Stamford Bridge.

Chelsea have seen two offers rejected for Fofana and will have to make the 21-year-old the world’s most expensive defender to sign him from Leicester, who want more than £80million.

Fofana is keen on a move to Stamford Bridge and was dropped from the Leicester squad on Saturday because Brendan Rodgers didn’t think he was in the right frame of mind to play.

Everton winger Gordon still wants to join Chelsea. The Blues had a £45m bid for the England Under-21 international turned down last week. Everton are unwilling to lose Gordon but Frank Lampard has admitted he cannot guarantee the 21-year-old will stay at Goodison Park.

If Chelsea sign Aubameyang, Fofana and Gordon in the remaining 10 days of the summer window, they would break the record for transfer spending in a single summer, having already spent £170million.

New owners Todd Boehly and Clearlake believe they need to spend to compete with Manchester City and Liverpool. They back Thomas Tuchel, who had initial talks about extending his contract beyond 2024.

Tuchel said yesterday: “The transfer window is still open and it’s getting later and later and we have to focus on what we have and what we can do.”
