ours after Roman Abramovich announced he had put Chelsea up for sale, the Blues beat Luton 3-2 to reach the FA Cup quarter-finals.
James Robson was at Kenilworth Road to rate Chelsea players…
Kepa Arrizabalaga 6
Dropped by his defenders for Luton’s two goals. Not too much he could have done to stop either.
Toni Rudiger 6
Looked frustrated as the Chelsea defense struggled to solidify. Luton spotted gaps around him to exploit.
Ruben Loftus-Cheek 8
He is not a centre-back and has been exposed at times. But it was his precise ball that created Werner’s equalizer in the second half and then, when he moved into midfield, opened up the Luton defense in preparation for Lukaku’s strike.
Malang Sarr 5
Beaten in the air for Burke’s opener, then far too easily into a running race with Cornick for Luton’s second goal. Generally seemed uncomfortable in a makeshift back three.
Callum Hudson-Odoi 6
One of Chelsea’s best first half players. Lively and took the opportunity to stretch Luton’s defence, but less effective after the break.
We would have expected to have more influence in the midfield. I struggled to choose assists.
Saul Niguez 7
Could have scored a hat-trick in the first half. Took his goal well and got up in support effectively from midfield.
His first game since 2018. Forced a good save from Isted, but looked rusty at times.
mason mount 6
Kept the pressure on the Luton defense well with his darts in the box and used the ball well.
Romelu Lukaku 7
Slipped the winner after Chelsea hit back twice. Worked hard for much of the game without much service before earning his reward.
Timo Werner 7
For long stretches it seemed like another frustrating night, but there was no mistake knocking down Loftus-Cheek’s slick pass to equalize – then he provided the cross for Lukaku to score.
Christian Pulsic (Kenedy, 61) 6
Fresh legs helped stretch Luton as Chelsea dominated possession.
Harvey Val (Hudson-Odoi, 62) 5
Looked comfortable and added energy to Chelsea.
Reece James (Jorginho, 76) 6
He has looked so fresh since his return and adds so much to Chelsea on the attacking right.
