Chelsea legend John Terry reportedly backs away from Tottenham defence, Jamie O’Hara fumes, as Neil Warnock says Middlesbrough players are better than Spurs flops at the back

The Tottenham defense came under heavy criticism on talkSPORT after another sloppy display on Sunday.

Spurs were beaten 2-0 at home to Wolves, their second successive defeat at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium after the 3-2 loss to Southampton.

Both matches were characterized by half-hearted defending, with the opponents having too much time in the final third.

Speaking after the match, coach Antonio Conte denounced his players’ attitude.

“The problem is that you can’t buy the winning mentality,” said the Italian. “You transfer it day to day and (you’re) not sure that (it’s) day to day, because there are players who are more open and they understand the process quickly, other players need more time to figure this out.

“The winning mentality, in my opinion, means that when you play, (think) ‘I’m ready to kill you and live’. It’s the difference in every duel, every second ball, every free kick.

“When you show more desire than your opponent, when you understand that defeats must hurt you a lot, not a little… It’s not easy.”

And former Tottenham midfielder Jamie O’Hara was left enraged by his former team’s level of defence.

He told talkSPORT: “We have the manager, but we need him to make the players believe they can keep clean sheets.

“It was one thing about Conte’s sides, they kept clean sheets. When he arrived, all of a sudden, we backed things up.

“It’s so frustrating. James Ward-Prowse against Southampton, he put two incredible balls in the box, but tight! Stop the crosses!

“Yesterday it was the same, the wolves were shooting at will. Get out there!

“Ben Davies turned his back four or five times when Wolves were attacking.

“John Terry was watching this game and thinking, ‘Oh my God, what is this?’ This man would have put his head on the block to prevent the ball from going into his net.

“Wolves are keeping the sheets clean this season and they’ve been great at that. Every player is organized and they will die for the team.

“Conor Coady, at the heart of this defense, is an exceptional leader and he will do anything to keep the ball out of his net.

“Spurs? Take a chance, bend one in the six-yard box, whatever, we’ll deal with it.

“No! Stop the shots at the source, stop letting the ball enter your box so easily.

“You can’t expect to get results when you concede cheap goals every week. It’s Tottenham. Come on.”

Meanwhile, former Middlesbrough manager Neil Warnock believes he had better players at the Riverside than Spurs currently have.

Warnock told talkSPORT: “I don’t think he [Antonio Conte] realized how difficult this job is.

“In the last two or three years, I never thought any of the centre-halves weren’t good.

“I saw them play. I keep talking about my guys from Middlesbrough. They are better than any of those Tottenham centre-halves by a mile!

“They know what they are doing! These teams do not know what they are doing behind.
