Chelsea legend Didier Drogba tells ex-Tottenham Mido star he ‘wants to cry’ as Liverpool star Mohamed Salah breaks records

Chelsea legend Didier Drogba has said he “wants to cry” as Liverpool star Mohamed Salah breaks his records, but is not surprised at the world-class form of his former team-mate.

Drogba’s 104 goals were a Premier League record for an African player for more than six years, but Salah has since stolen the crown and currently has 108 goals.

The Egyptian king has scored 11 times in 12 league appearances this season, leading some to call him the best player in the world in his current form.

It didn’t always go so well for Salah, who joined Chelsea from Basel in 2014 for £ 11million but only made 19 appearances before moving to Serie A in Rome.

Drogba believes Salah will break his old park record, telling former Egypt international and Tottenham striker Mido how difficult the watch has been.

“He’s going to destroy my record,” Drogba said. “Oh my god, I want to cry.”

Drogba has played alongside Mido in Marseille, as well as Salah at Chelsea, and when asked by the interviewer about Salah’s world-class transformation, Drogba’s response may come as a surprise.

He explained: “When people ask me and they say ‘oh but you played with Salah’ I say yes, we played together, we practiced together, we spent a lot of time together, even though he is left in January to play more minutes in the field.

“But what I saw in training, and all his teammates will tell you, the quality was there, he just needed time on the pitch to show his talent and quality.

“When you look at the squad we had at the time, with Diego Costa, with me, with Mo Salah, Oscar, Eden Hazard, all these guys, it was not easy to play.

“But what really attached me to Mo, he’s a really nice guy, he’s really polite, even when he wasn’t playing he was sad that he wasn’t contributing to the team but he was still good.

“Not a single word about the coach or even the players, so when you have that kind of intelligence, it’s only a matter of time for you to explode.”

Salah continues to rack up a number of records following his £ 36.5million transfer from Rome to Liverpool in 2017, and doesn’t seem to want to stop anytime soon.

The 29-year-old recently became Liverpool’s all-time top scorer in the Champions League, holding the record for most goals in 38 Premier League games with 32.

Drogba, who himself had a rough start in England, explained the only advice he offered to Salah that has since been crucial.

“I remember we spoke a few times when he was in Rome,” Drogba said. “He was scoring goals and then he had a moment where he wasn’t scoring and he asked me ‘how do you handle these kinds of situations?’

“I shared with him a lot of examples and experiences, it happened to me, it happened to all forwards, to go through a difficult time like this.

“But we have to get back to basics, and he did. And as soon as he did that… Boom. And he’s still unstoppable.
