Chelsea are aiming for more silverware as they start their Carabao Cup campaign tonight.
After winning the Champions League last season, Thomas Tuchel is aiming for more trophies this season and the Blues will face Aston Villa in a third round draw at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea beat Villa 3-0 in the Premier League earlier this month, but the game was much more even than the score suggests.
Ahead of a huge meeting with Manchester City on Saturday, Tuchel will want Chelsea to keep up the momentum after their good start to the season.
Villa initially got off to a slow start after selling Jack Grealish to Manchester City in the summer, but now appear to be stepping into high gear under Dean Smith and beating Everton 3-0 on Saturday.
With kickoff at 7.45pm BST, follow all the action with James Robson live at Stamford Bridge.
Chelsea to release £ 300million in reserves on Aston Villa
Chelsea’s ‘fringe’ squad tonight are expected to be worth around £ 300million.
But Tuchel doesn’t pay much attention to those numbers, saying yesterday of the world’s most expensive goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga: “Who cares about the money? The money has been paid and what now?
“The question now is, can we afford to have him as a goalkeeper?” We have two super strong goalies and we need both.
Commenting on Timo Werner, who is expected to lead the line for Chelsea tonight in search of his first goal of the season, he added: “We know he can be a lot more dangerous and a lot more threatening in attack than he is. was not.
“In the last few training sessions he was more relaxed, more fluid in his movements and showed more confidence.
“And that’s why we put him early against Tottenham, because we’ve seen this development and there are clear signs that he’s on the right track. And I hope he can show it and prove it. .
“Sometimes it takes a little while. Sometimes you don’t have that particular reason why things seem a little easier, but Timo is right now. He can also push himself and maintain that momentum.
“Everyone is happy if he can show his skills in front of goal. That’s why he’s there to be dangerous, to score goals and also to help. And to create and open spaces with aggressive tracks. It was a big step forward in the last game against Tottenham.
Standard sports prediction
Tuchel could well make 11 changes to his squad and still boast a scary XI, which means Villa faces a tough task no matter how much the German places this competition.
Chelsea team news
Edouard Mendy faces a fight to return in time for Chelsea’s clash with Manchester City.
The goalkeeper was excluded from tonight’s Carabao Cup fixture with Aston Villa after missing out on the 3-0 win over Tottenham at the weekend.
He has yet to recover from a blow suffered against Zenit last week, with Chelsea medical staff watching him before Saturday.
Thomas Tuchel confirms: “We will try to do everything for Saturday, and reinstate him tomorrow in individual training and, hopefully Thursday, in team training. But not yet.
“I think it’s possible (that he’s back for City) but it’s a bit of a race against pain and time. I hope he will be back in team training on Thursday.
“If it goes well, I hope he can be ready for Saturday, but I don’t know yet.”
Tuchel plans to make a number of changes against Villa with Timo Werner and Ben Chilwell set to start, while Saul Niguez and Ruben Loftus-Cheek are both in contention.
The Chelsea manager added: “It’s a question of the number of games, the load we have had on the players.
“Yes, we will have changes, because we take the opportunity to give important minutes in important competitions to the guys who are missing minutes at the moment.
“Of course we want to give Saul a few minutes. First of all, the guys want to show off and impress and keep pushing.
“We need certain players to have more competition minutes and be a competitive team. We need them to have the opportunity to push some guys and also trust them in a competitive cup game like tomorrow. Saul is one of them.
Team predicted by Chelsea (3-4-2-1): Kepa; Jacques, Christensen, Chalobah; Hudson-Odoi, Loftus-Cheek, Saul, Chilwell; Ziyech, Werner; Lukaku
