The England international suffered an ankle problem in the early stages of the Club World Cup final victory over Palmeiras last weekend and was substituted after just half an hour.
Mount, who scored seven goals and eight assists in a season hampered by injury, is now sidelined for at least two weeks meaning he will miss Saturday’s trip to Crystal Palace and Chelsea’s return to the Champions League when Lille visit. Stamford Bridge for the first leg of the round of 16 next week.
Thomas Tuchel’s side next face Liverpool at Wembley on Sunday February 27 in the Carabao Cup final, a shot at a second trophy this month for Chelsea, although Mount is unlikely to feature.
Christian Pulisic has been frustrated with the lack of playing time and the positions he’s been deployed in by Tuchel, which means the next two weeks are a chance to impress the American.
“He raced with César Azpilicueta and they fell and his opponent fell on his ankle and he badly injured his ligaments,” Tuchel said of Mount after the Club World Cup triumph at Abu Dhabi.
“He came straight to me and said, ‘It doesn’t feel good, it’s very stiff and painful’, so we had to make a decision.”
Tuchel will at least be able to accommodate Reece James soon with a hamstring injury as the full-back has been out since December.
