Helsea have emerged as favorites in the race to sign RB Leipzig’s Christopher Nkunku amid suggestions the player has already undergone a ‘secret’ medical.
The versatile French striker was a transfer target during a turbulent summer window – the first under the new Boehly-Clearlake ownership scheme – at Stamford Bridge after scoring 35 goals in just 52 appearances in all competitions last season , although he ended up signing a two-year contract. contract extension in the Bundesliga in June.
Such a deal committed Nkunku to Leipzig until 2026, although in reality did little to quash other suggestions that an exit from the Red Bull Arena remained imminent.
Links with Chelsea quickly resurfaced and it is now understood the 24-year-old has already undergone part of a medical ahead of a possible move to west London in 2023.
The Daily Telegraph reports that Nkunku had tests in Frankfurt this summer attended by a Chelsea orthopaedist.
Transfer guru Fabrizio Romano adds that the Blues have also sent a long-term contract offer to the player, who reportedly has a release clause in his current contract from Leipzig worth £52.58million.
However, talks are said to be ongoing between the two clubs as to whether this fee will have to be paid in full or if a possible transfer can be structured in a different way.
Chelsea have agreed to return striker Timo Werner to his former club this summer and standard sports understands they have now added Leipzig’s Christopher Vivell to their list of candidates for the vacant technical director post, after missing out on RB Salzburg sporting director Christoph Freund.
