Chelsea confirm Romelu Lukaku’s loan to former club Inter Milan as Belgium striker says he’s ‘very happy to be back’ after infamous interview

Romelu Lukaku’s nightmare at Chelsea has officially come to an end, with the Premier League club confirming he has completed his return on loan to former club Inter Milan.

The Belgian striker joined the Blues in a deal worth just under £100m last summer but struggled to find his form after scoring just eight Premier League goals in the 2021/22 season.

A statement from Chelsea read: “Romelu Lukaku will spend the 2022/23 campaign with Inter Milan after completing a season-long loan from Chelsea.”

The short and pragmatic statement went on to mention Lukaku’s past season highlights without offering any commentary.

The transfer news was also confirmed in a short video released by Inter in which the player said he was “very happy”.

The Serie A outfit followed up with another tweet which read: ‘Welcome Rom’.

It’s a decision that will come as a welcome relief to both clubs, with Inter looking to regain their Serie A title which Lukaku played a huge part in winning in the 2020/21 season.

Meanwhile, Chelsea have severed ties with a player for next season who has made it clear how unhappy he is with the club less than six months after re-signing.

In the explosive interview with Italian media, Lukaku also revealed his intentions to return to the Nerazzurri.

“Physically I’m fine. But I’m not happy with the situation at Chelsea,” Lukaku said in December 2021.

“Thomas Tuchel chose to play with another system, I will not give up, I will be professional. I’m not happy with the situation but I’m professional – and I can’t give up now.

Lukaku added: “It wasn’t supposed to happen like this. The way I left Inter, the way I communicated with the fans, it annoys me, because it can’t be. -not the right time to say it, but at the time, it was not the right time either.

“Now I think it’s fair to say because I said I will always have Inter in my heart and I sincerely hope to return there one day. I’m in love with Italy, that’s time to let people know what really happened, without saying bad things about anyone, because that’s not my style.

“Now is the right time to share my feelings. I have always said that I have Inter in my heart: I know that I will come back to Inter, I really hope so. I am in love with Italy is a good time to talk and let people know what really happened.

He continued: “I want to apologize to the Inter fans, because I think the way I left should have been done differently. I should have spoken to you first, because the things you you made for me, for my family, my mother, my son, it will stay with me for the rest of my life.

“I really, sincerely hope from the bottom of my heart to come back to Inter, not at the end of my career, but while I’m still at the level to win more trophies.”

His wish has now been granted and after returning to Inter, Lukaku’s words were rather fitting remembering what he said back in December.

Along with Inter president Steven Zhang told his club media: “I’m very happy to be back.”
