Chelsea ‘brilliant’ against Real Madrid in near stunning comeback but ‘tie lost’ at Stamford Bridge as La Liga giants warned Man City will tear them apart

It wasn’t the result Chelsea hoped for, but their Champions League quarter-final with Real Madrid will go down as an all-time classic.

Trailing 3-1 from the first leg at Stamford Bridge, they needed a mountainous effort to come back and reach the semi-finals.

They were so close to achieving it before Madrid found a way to get their way.

Mason Mount, Antonio Rudiger and Timo Werner put the Blues within touching distance of a famous win.

A brilliant goal from Rodrygo brought Madrid back to aggregate level before Karim Benzema scored 5-4 in extra time.

Former Chelsea ace Jason Cundy told Sports Bar: “Real Madrid are finding a way through. The game was lost at Stamford Bridge, that’s where we lost it.

“The third goal, the gift Mendy gave them, is ultimately the goal that cost us.

“The others were either brilliant skill with someone setting up Benzema or Benzema scoring. He scored four goals in the draw, and one of them was an absolute giveaway.

“Absolutely devastated. We were brilliant tonight, you can’t ask for more than to go to Real Madrid and put three goals behind them.

“We had chances [to win the game]. They were [shocking] and Man City will rip them apart. We scored four goals against them and we were also desperately unlucky with Marcos Alonso’s goal.

“You can’t complain because those are the laws.

“They got away with one tonight, Real Madrid. They didn’t start playing until their first goal of the game, it changed the game a bit.

“It deflated us and they knew they were back in the draw then. We had chances at Stamford Bridge and tonight.

“You can’t win every year. We went out on our shield tonight but ultimately Stamford Bridge cost us.

“We were terrible against Real Madrid in the first leg and I think Tuchel in hindsight will do things differently.

“Tonight, he understood.”
