Chelsea are now three points clear at the top of the Premier League table after their 3-0 win at Newcastle on Saturday.
A brace from Reece James and a penalty from Jorginho sealed the Blues’ three points, while Man City were beaten 2-0 at home by Crystal Palace and Liverpool were held in check 2-2 at home by Brighton.
The match started with a first chance from Newcastle as the ball passed through Edouard Mendy’s goal in less than two minutes, but soon a familiar pattern emerged.
In the first ten minutes, the Magpies were pushed deep into their own half as Chelsea applied pressure.
Despite all their dominance in possession, the Blues failed to carve out any clear chances in the first 25 minutes.
Hakim Ziyech believed he gave the visitors the advantage just before the half hour mark, but was offside when he received the pass from Jorginho and curled up in an exquisite finish.
Ziyech had another chance in the 34th minute as he skied a bouncing ball six yards past James’ cross.
At halftime the game was scoreless, with Chelsea having 75 percent possession but no shot on target.
After 15 minutes in the locker room with Thomas Tuchel, they came out quickly at the start of the second half and Ziyech hit the post with a deflected effort in the 47 minutes.
Kai Havertz tested Karl Darlow two minutes later, although his shot was comfortably collected.
James had a similar attempt at the time with identical result.
Five minutes later, it was he who finally found the breakthrough.
James scored a goal with his left foot when the ball fell to him from the right side of the penalty area.
And in the 78th minute, he pocketed a second by shooting home from the edge of the box.
At this point Newcastle completely surrendered and Jorginho scored 3-0 on the spot two minutes later after Karl Darlow awkwardly knocked Havertz down.
The results of the other kick-offs at 3pm mean Chelsea are now three points ahead of Liverpool and five ahead of Man City at the top of the Premier League.
