Helsea have agreed on a £33million fee to sign Benoit Badiashile from Monaco.
The 21-year-old has verbally agreed personal terms on a six-and-a-half-year contract and is in the process of scheduling a medical ahead of a move to west London.
The remaining details are being finalized but the centre-back is now expected to complete his move to Stamford Bridge with the January transfer window now open.
The France international had just 18 months left on his contract with the Ligue 1 club allowing Chelsea to agree a deal on a bargain fee in just days.
Graham Potter will add the left-sided defender to his options with Wesley Fofana and Ben Chilwell still injured.
Thiago Silva, 38, is yet to sign a contract extension which expires this summer.
Badiashile is set to be the third signing of the January transfer window for Chelsea after an £8.6million deal was announced for 19-year-old striker David Datro Fofana. Teenage midfielder Andrey Santos is also in London to complete a £20million move from Vasco.
Chelsea remain interested in continuing their business and are in talks to complete a club-record £105million transfer for Benfica midfielder Enzo Fernandez.
Talks have slowed down amid negotiations to spread payments over several seasons to avoid FFP (Financial Fair Play) sanctions.
