IPL locations in Mumbai: Mumbai hosts 55 matches of IPL 2022 at Wankhede Stadium, Brabourne Stadium and DY Patil Stadium in Navi Mumbai. The curators have opted for a surface of red earth here.

In Pune it will be a black ground surface with a huge difference in results and conditions.

IPL 2022 Presentation Report

Mumbai’s surfaces should make scoring easier as has traditionally been the case, with the red ground facilitating pace and rebounding.

Meanwhile, the black ground will provide more help for the spinners, but should still be a running fest, as seen in recent games played by India at the venue.

Here is the pitch report for all stadiums used in IPL 2022:

Wankhede Stadium IPL 2022 FIELD

The Wankhede is traditionally a hunting ground with teams using the dew to their advantage to chase totals. Only three of the last 13 games on the site have been won by teams beating first, with the first leg score of the last 20 being 175.

Aggressive hitters and fast and/or swing bowlers can be expected to dominate. The Rapids have taken almost 73% of the wickets here in the last 20 games.

Gujarat Titans head coach Ashish Nehra and fast RCB Harshal Patel believe the red ground surface will have more pace and bounce and could be used by fast bowlers to make an impact.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Nehra pointed out that aggressive strike bowlers can easily take quick wickets in the power play announcement, perhaps neutralizing the damage batters could potentially cause in the second half of innings.

“With the new ball, you saw bowlers take two or three wickets in the first three overs, which you don’t see in Chennai or Hyderabad. You need to capitalize from the start. If you play well, you will get your reward”.

Brabourne Stadium IPL 2022 PITCH

It’s been a long time since Brabourne Stadium has hosted a competitive T20 match, but like Wankhede, it remains a high-scoring surface. Another red ground pitch, the ground should have the same characteristic as the Wankhede, meaning the point guards could party again, while scores in the region above 170 would be the norm. Spinners could come into play more, since the dimensions are much larger here than in Wankhede.

Speaking to ESPNCricinfo, Harshal Patel said: “The biggest feature of red dirt pitches is the bounce they provide and every time there is a bounce the ball tends to travel farther.” Harshal said. “It can be both an advantage and a disadvantage. I suspect that in the second half of the tournament it will start to turn due to the large number of games played and the heat.

DY Patil Stadium, Navi Mumbai

It has been a decade since the IPL was played here, with the stadium being used as a football ground for two years. Although no data as such is available for the venue, the stadium is expected to be one of the most difficult venues to mark as the ground dimensions are quite large compared to other venues in Mumbai. The outfield should be fast though, which means it would again be a high-scoring pitch.

MCA Stadium has only hosted one T20 match in the last four years, but there has been a big shift from slow-rotating tracks to a high-scoring venue with a pace on offer. The chase is again the preferred option with teams winning nine of the last 14 games. The black ground should give spinners more assist compared to the Mumbai venues, with some turns and bounces.

The place also has shorter boundaries compared to Brabourne. The spinners could play a big role in day games here as they conceded just 6.78 runs per over and hit once every 23 balls. Of the four IPL venues this year at the league stadium, we could see the spinners come into play the earliest in Pune compared to the other three venues.
