Charles Martin is “desperate” to avenge his loss to Anthony Joshua as he prepares to face dangerous Cuban Luis Ortiz.
Martin, who held the IBF world title in 2016, was unceremoniously knocked out by the Briton in just two rounds as his pithy title reign pathetically ended.
Since then, “Prince Charles” has worked tirelessly to try to restore his reputation and has won five of his last six fights.
A second date with fate potentially awaits him when he takes on Ortiz on New Years Day in Hollywood, Fla. In an IBF title eliminator.
Joshua is currently preparing for a fight, a rematch with Oleksandr Usyk in “March or April” in his bid to win back the IBF, WBO and WBA titles that were ripped off his waist in September.
Martin’s manager Mike Barao believes the Ukrainian will likely keep those belts in the rematch but is hopeful, for the sake of his client, that they will be brought back to Britain.
“I think Usyk still beats Joshua, but I support Joshua,” Martin Borao manager told Sky Sports.
“Charles desperately wants to fight and knock Joshua out before he retires. He’s been focused on this singular goal since 2016 – that’s what drives him and that’s why he will beat Luiz Ortiz.
“Charles will do whatever it takes to become a two-time heavyweight champion, including fighting a second IBF eliminator against one of the most avoided heavyweights in the world.”
Martin last fought on Tyson Fury’s destructive display undercard against Deontay Wilder in February 2020, stopping Gerald Washington in a devastating way.
Barao admits it hasn’t been easy for the left-handed Missouri slugger, having tried to set up fights against Andy Ruiz Jr and Dillian Whyte in an effort to secure a victory.
“Charles asked me to confront him with the only knockout fighter Joshua, Andy Ruiz,” Borao said. “I tried really hard to fight Andy, but he refused.
“We also tried to make the fight against Dillian unsuccessful – and thank goodness given his most recent withdrawal. [from the Otto Wallin fight due to injury]. “
