Charlbi Dean cause of death confirmed after sudden death at 32: coroner

Charlbi Dean died of bacterial sepsis in August, the New York medical examiner confirmed to Fox News Digital. She was 32 years old.

Dean’s death was ruled an accident. The medical examiner indicated that his cause of death was “bacterial sepsis (Capnocytophaga) complicating asplenia due to blunt trauma remote from the torso”.

Dean was reportedly involved in a car accident in 2009. Along with the removal of her spleen, she suffered broken ribs and a broken back.

Dean’s brother, Alex Jacobs, spoke to ‘Rolling Stone’ a few days after his death and explained that Charlbi experienced “minor” symptoms. She asked her fiancé, Luke Volker, to take her to the emergency room. She died a few hours later.

“[The spleen is] involved in infection control, and it might have had something to do with what happened,” Jacobs said. “Her spleen not being there just added to the reason she maybe couldn’t fight it.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), Capnocytophaga bacteria “are normal bacteria commonly found in the mouths of humans, dogs, and cats.”

Caitlin Cossaboom, a CDC Epidemic Intelligence Officer and trained veterinarian, previously told Fox News Digital that “severe Capnocytophaga infections are very rare,” but people with compromised immune systems, who have have trouble fighting infections, are more at risk of getting sick.

It’s unclear if an animal was responsible for Dean’s infection. Fox News Digital has reached out to Dean’s rep for comment.
