Chamber of Commerce House of Horrors

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce may be the nation’s premier business lobby, but it could benefit from guidance on its policy investments. The lobby’s 2020 gamble that backing “centrist” House Democrats would protect against anti-corporate policies has been a failure.

The House heading into 2020 took the unusual step of changing its voting scorecard to approve the re-election of 23 freshman House Democrats. The theory was that Democrats were likely to control Congress. The endorsements would buy support from Democrats who resist an onslaught from the progressive left on taxes and regulations. Fifteen of the 23 were re-elected. (See list nearby.)
