Cesar Azpilicueta backs ‘great player’ Saul Niguez after struggles on Chelsea debut, reveals hope to stay at Stamford Bridge ‘as long as I can’

Cesar Azpilicueta has said his compatriot Spain and new Chelsea signing Saul Niguez just needed time to adjust after his disappointing debut against Aston Villa on Saturday.

The midfielder, who signed for Thomas Tuchel’s side from Atletico Madrid on the deadline day, was pulled just 45 minutes after his Chelsea debut.

But Azpilicueta insists his international teammate will be a key player for the Blues this season.

“Saul is a great player. I’ve known him since his days in the national team, ”Azpilicueta said.

“He has a lot of experience at the highest level with Atletico Madrid in the Champions League and, when he signed for Chelsea, he had a bit of stress in the last hours of the transfer window.

“He came to a new country, just training sessions on the pitch, his first game was against good opposition and they were very aggressive, so that’s to be expected.

“Sometimes it takes a little longer to adjust. His response was absolutely perfect. He has decided to improve, he asks questions, he wants to adapt as quickly as possible.

“Some players need more time than others. It is quite natural. He asked for our full support.

“It’s a great addition. I’m very happy to have him on our team and I’m sure he will continue to grow and help the team because we need everyone.

“I am sure he will be an important player this season.”

As for his own future, the Spaniard has said he wants to stay at Stamford Bridge as long as he can.

“I have no concerns,” Azpilicueta added. “I feel fully confident with the club since my arrival.

“Yes, it’s true that my contract ends in June but I’m just focused on the rest, which is to train, to play the best I can, and everything will work out on its own.

“I don’t need to say anything more. I just feel like I have to keep doing the things I am doing and it will all just happen.
