CBS To Rebroadcast Billy Joel Concert After ‘Piano Man’ Debacle

CBS just announced that the network will rebroadcast Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden special in its entirety this Friday, April 19, after Sunday’s presentation was interrupted in certain regions of the country while the singer was in the middle of his flagship hit “Piano Man”.

“A network programming error ended last night’s Billy Joel special approximately two minutes early in the Eastern and Central time zones,” CBS said in a statement. “We apologize to Mr. Joel, his fans, our affiliated stations and our audiences whose viewing experience was interrupted during the last song.

“Due to overwhelming demand from his legion of fans,” the statement continued, “Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden will rebroadcast in its entirety on CBS on April 19 at 9:00 p.m. ET/PT.

The broadcast of Sunday’s special program in the East and Central zones was interrupted by local news at 11 p.m., shortly before the finale of the song “la la la de das”. The end came something like: “And the piano sounds like a carnival/And the microphone smells of beer/And they sit at the…”

Billy Joel: The 100th – Live at Madison Square Garden The special began a half-hour late Sunday evening due to overtime coverage of the 2024 Masters Tournament.

Fans expressed their outrage on social media. “You couldn’t make a worse product than what CBS just made in the Billy Joel special,” one tweeted. “Way too many commercials, he didn’t play some of his best songs, he was extremely messy with his set list, and then he cut off the local news in the middle of Piano Man?!? A total failure on the part of CBS.

Another wrote: “@CBS Maybe you could reschedule the Billy Joel concert that your affiliates cut short to move to local late night news. We, the fans, are not happy. And there are plenty of options for watching TV, etc. other than you… You have to bring him back.

And another: “Are you kidding me? I recorded him for 3 hours because I knew he was late. They seriously cut the news??? It’s terrible.”

Barstool Sports, who shared a clip of the truncated song, wrote: “How do you cut a Billy Joel concert in the middle of Piano Man?! »

The concert was recorded on March 28 at Madison Square Garden to mark the 100th show of his long (and final) hometown residency.

In addition to the CBS rebroadcast, the concert special is available – in its entirety – on Paramount+.

And in the unlikely event, you don’t remember: “…bar and put some bread in my pot/And say, ‘Dude, what are you doing here?’ »
