Border Patrol officials report that officers apprehended nearly 210,000 migrants who illegally crossed the southwest border into Mexico in March. The arrests mark a new record for the Biden administration as it nears the end of the Title 42 migrant deportation program.
U.S. Customs and Border Protection released the March Southwest Land Border Encounters Report after the close of business Monday night. The report confirms an April 1 Breitbart Texas report that found officers apprehended more than 209,000 migrants in March. The official report says 209,906 migrants were apprehended by Border Patrol agents after illegally crossing the southwestern border between entry points.
The arrest of nearly 210,000 migrants in March marks a 32% increase from the February report. This also represents a 24% increase from March 2021. This is the highest number of migrant arrests since President Joe Biden took office in January 2021. This is the highest number of arrests recorded in March since the last year of the Clinton administration in 2000.
With the exception of the Laredo sector, all sectors along the southwestern border saw a marked increase in the number of migrant arrests in March. These increases ranged from 31% in the El Centro sector to nearly 590% in the Yuma sector. The Laredo area reported a 0.4% decline.
The Rio Grande Valley area continues its reign as the busiest area with more than 245,000 arrests in March – a 53% increase from March 2021. It is closely followed by the Del Rio area where officers apprehended more than 195,000 – an increase of 184.5% from March 2021. the previous March.
CBP officials released the record Biden-era report after the close of business Monday. Officials report that single adults accounted for 76% of all migrant arrests. The 169,062 single adult arrests show a 33% spike from the February report.
Unaccompanied foreign children made up just 14,167 of the total arrests in March. This represents an 18% increase from the February report. Family units accounted for 26,721 – a 42% increase from February.
With plans to end the Title 42 coronavirus protection protocol at the end of May, authorities are bracing for an increase in migrant crossings.
“While we may likely see an increase in encounters following the end of the CDC’s Title 42 public health order on May 23, CBP continues to execute this administration’s overall strategy to safely manage our borders, orderly and humane,” CBP Commissioner Chris Magnus said in a written statement released late Monday. “CBP is moving personnel and resources to the border, increasing processing capacity, securing more ground and air transportation, and increasing medical supplies, food, water, and other resources to ensure a humane environment for those which are treated.
