LeBron James has made it clear that he wants to play alongside his eldest son, Bronny, in the NBA one day.
Based on the Los Angeles Lakers’ lack of future draft picks and general marketable assets, as well as their overall roster, it’s hard to see how this plays out in Los Angeles.
LeBron is currently in contract extension negotiations with the Lakers. So far, he’s signaled that there’s really only one condition in which he’d be willing to give up purple and gold.
Recently, an Eastern Conference executive spoke to NBA insider Sean Deveney and revealed the one team that could be a legitimate suitor for both LeBrons. and Bronny.
“The two things I would worry about if I was the Lakers are the Cavaliers and Bronny,” the exec said. “He wants to play with Bronny and he said he will when the opportunity arises.
“He never said he would in Bronny’s rookie season, but if he decides he wants to do it in 2024, then LeBron will only sign for one more year and he’ll take a minimum of something. leaves to play with his son. But there are also variables there, like is Bronny definitely going to be unique?
“And there’s the Cleveland thing. The Cavs could get in position to get Bronny and sign LeBron in one fell swoop in 2024. It’s a home run for this team. They’re going to keep that in mind, whatever they do in the next two years. So the Lakers window here is really small.
LeBron has been pretty open that there’s really only one way to get back to Cleveland. But the lure of playing alongside Bronny will no doubt be strong.
Bronny is fast approaching college, and there are a number of suitors eager to offer him a place. Between four old-school powerhouses and a new dark horse, the youngster has no shortage of options.
But wherever he decides to go, he has to perform at a high level. Because all this chatter about a LeBron-Bronny team hinges on him actually being a strong enough player to make the NBA.
If he becomes another Shareef O’Neal, it will make the situation much more complicated.
Will LeBron and Bronny ever be able to team up on a pro level as they clearly want?
Time will tell us.
