Cates Leads the Way in Flyers Win the Penguins

The trio of Noah Cates, Morgan Frostand Owen Tippet has been affectionately nicknamed the “Kid Line”. The children were fine on Sunday afternoon.

Cates scored two goals and Frost netted the other in a 4-1 win over the Pittsburgh Penguins at the Wells Fargo Center.

For most of the period, scoring chances were limited despite an increasing number of shots for both teams. With 4:11 to play in the period, the Flyers finally had the chance to cash in.

A point knocked down by Ronnie Attard was stopped by Louis Domingo, but left a rebound wide of the net. Cates sent him forward and Tippett had a chance that was denied on the rebound, but Frost was there to provide another rebound chance for his fifth goal of the season and second in as many games.

Within 20 minutes the shots were 15-14 Flyers.

Both teams again racked up the shots in the second period, with the Penguins leading 27-26 in two periods, but the Flyers again scored the only goal.

At 6:49, a point shot by Keith Yandle was deflected by Cates for his fourth goal of the season, making it 2-0.

Cates scored again in the third period on the power play at 9:38, scoring his second goal of the game on a deflection to make it 3-0.

With 3:33 left in the third and the goaltender out, the Penguins finally got on the board as Sidney Crosby was on the doorstep to bring home a loose puck. Just 59 seconds later, Travis Konecny ended things with a goal in an empty net.

Martin Jones made 37 saves on 38 shots in the win. Domingue made 39 saves on 42 shots.

Cates finished with two goals and an assist. Frost and Yandle each had two points.

The Flyers are back on the ice Monday night to face the Chicago Blackhawks at 8 p.m.
