Castro loses phone in Pirates 6-4 loss to Diamondbacks

PHOENIX (AP) — Rodolfo Castro got the call and dropped a call to return to the major leagues.

The Pittsburgh infielder lost his phone on a slide to third base and the Pirates lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks 6-4 on Tuesday night.

“I don’t think there’s a professional baseball player out there who would go out with the intention of picking up a cell phone,” Castro told Pittsburgh media through an interpreter. “It’s horrible what happened to me. Obviously it was very unintentional.

Rookie Tommy Henry (1-1) was sharp in his Chase Field debut, allowing one run on four hits in seven innings for his first major league win.

Castro made a different kind of noise after being called from Triple-A Indianapolis — with his phone.

The sophomore second baseman walked in the fourth inning and went third on Oneil Cruz’s single. Castro slid headfirst into the bag to beat the throw and the impact sent his phone flying out of his back pocket.

Third base umpire Adam Hamari immediately saw the phone and pointed it at the ground. Castro, 23, picked up the phone and handed it to Pirates third baseman coach Mike Rebelo, who looked exasperated before picking it up.

Castro said he put his oven mitt in his pocket and forgot the phone.

“You stay around the game and you see things you’ve never seen before,” Pirates manager Derek Shelton said. “He was just a kid who made a mistake. It’s just one of those things that we come forward and say, ‘You can’t do this.’

Major League Baseball has cracked down on technology used on the field since the Houston Astros used live TV feeds to steal opposing teams’ signs during their 2017 World Series championship run and part of the 2018 season. .

Astros general manager Jeff Luhnow and manager AJ Hinch were suspended for the 2020 season. The Astros were also fined $5 million and lost their 2020 and 2021 first- and second-round picks .

Castro may want to keep his phone nearby on Wednesday in case MLB decides to impose a penalty.

“My first day back, if I were to be the center of attention, I would want it to help the team win, but never in this form,” Castro said. “It’s definitely something that was an accident, a mistake, something I’m going to learn from. But definitely something I didn’t want to happen.

Mark Melancon worked around a ball in the ninth for his 16th save. Zach Thompson (3-9) took the loss.

Michael Chavis hit two home runs for the Pirates.

HENRI’S NIGHT

Henry made an uneven major league debut against Washington on Aug. 3, allowing four runs on four hits in five innings.

The rookie southpaw was effective in his first major league home game, keeping the Pirates off balance until Chavis hit a solo homer in the sixth inning.

“I felt very different,” he said. “I felt like I could breathe a bit today, settle down a bit. And I think that comes from being more familiar with everyone, familiar with the routine.

Chavis also hit a two-run homer off Chris Devenski in the eighth inning to bring Pittsburgh down to 6-4.

THOMPSON’S TOUR

Thompson has been faltering in his two previous starts, allowing 14 runs in 11 innings. The right-hander was back on track against the Diamondbacks, allowing two runs on five hits in 4 2/3 innings.

DIAMONDBACK MOVEMENTS

Arizona recalled OF Cooper Hummel and opted for C Jose Herrera in Triple-A Reno.

Hummel, who played mostly on the field in his first stint with Arizona, will support receiver Carson Kelly. Hummel hit .171 with two homers and 11 RBIs in 50 games for the Diamondbacks earlier in his rookie season.

Herrera hit .189 with five RBIs in 47 games for the Diamondbacks.

PIRATE MOVEMENTS

The Pirates picked OF Cal Mitchell for Triple-A Indianapolis when they called Castro. Mitchell hit .204 with four homers in 44 games with Pittsburgh.
