Carrick: the first victory “was for Solskjaer” with the dismissal “not an easy moment”

But Carrick was glad his night’s work had only had two days to prepare for the sacking of his former boss.

He told BT Sport: “I really appreciated it all, the support I got.

“It hasn’t been a few easy days for anyone at the club and this result almost looks like Ole’s, I can’t live without it.

“We had a job to do and things needed to be worked out. I was happy to do it and luckily everything turned out as planned.

Late goals from Cristiano Ronaldo and Jadon Sancho did the trick for United and Carrick praised the way the Red Devils have gone through long stretches with their backs to the wall in Spain.

“We were ready for this tonight,” he added. “It’s a good team that makes you work in possession.

“The boys sometimes had to dig and show a bit of everything, so I was delighted with how it ended.

“When you’ve suffered in terms of results and you’re not in good shape, individually and as a team, it’s not easy to go out and let it all kick in.

“In some ways it was the best way to win for me, that we had to show character and fight.”
