Top scorer Jon Mellish scored twice in as many second-half minutes as Carlisle beat Scunthorpe 2-0 to move within three points of the Sky Bet League Two play-off spots.
The Cumbrians’ most successful midfielder for 27 years gave the hosts a clear hat-trick as they stepped into the turn in Callum Guy’s 60th minute.
The former Sunderland intern then turned Guy’s fiercely pushed cross for his 15th goal of the season and 10th in the league.
This means Chris Beech’s side are ninth and back on track after a streak of just two wins in 14 games in February and March.
Scunthorpe, beaten for just the second time in nine games, shaped the best chances of the first half at Brunton Park.
Successive saves by left-back Mason O’Malley and left-back Paul Farman and iron skipper Jordan Clarke were essential in preparing for Carlisle’s third straight 2-0 victory.
However, the hosts dominated after the break. Joe Riley blocked shots twice, Offering Zanzala flew from close range and goalkeeper Rory Watson made an exceptional save to deny Rod McDonald before Mellish struck twice.
