Carl Bernstein calls Trump ‘war criminal’ over Capitol riots, pandemic deaths

Legendary journalist Carl Bernstein on Sunday called former President Donald Trump a “war criminal” for “plotting a coup” and blasted him for mismanaging the COVID-19 pandemic.

It’s time to “step back” and take a clear look at Trump “in a different context,” Bernstein told Brian Stelter on CNN’s “Trusted Sources”.

Trump is “our own American war criminal, of a kind we have never known before,” he said.

“What we’re talking about Trump’s crimes as an American war criminal … he committed against our people, [includes] the tens of thousands of people who have died because of his own lethal negligence ”regarding COVID-19, Bernstein said. He “has placed his own electoral interests above the health of our people, because they have been slaughtered in this pandemic,” he added.

As the virus began to spread around the world in February 2020, Trump insisted it would “disappear” like “a miracle.” After contracting the disease and receiving excellent, experimental health treatment, he told Americans not to “be afraid of COVID.”

So far, nearly 611,000 Americans have died from the disease.

Bernstein, who is known for his reporting on the Watergate scandal that brought down former President Richard Nixon, went on to say that Trump’s “war crimes” also include “the fomenting of a coup for retain his duties “, referring to the January 6 riot at the Capitol. . He noted that Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff Mark Milley compared Trump to Hitler and his supporters in the Nazi brown shirts.

“It’s not just about impeachment offenses. This is another type of crime in which the humanity of the people of the United States has been relegated to the ground by the President of the United States, who only elevated his own narrow political, financial and personal interests. above those of our people, our country, our Constitution, ”said Bernstein.

Trump could not immediately be reached for comment.
