When Zaven Collins became the 16th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft and was selected by the Cardinals, he probably wouldn’t have quite imagined the scenario he would find himself in hours later on his way to his conference. introductory press release.
The Cardinals had sent a private jet to pick up Collins from his home in Tulsa, Okla. Fairly normal for a first round perspective.
What was a little more unusual was that Cardinals owner Michael Bidwell was the one flying the plane.
NFL POWER RANKS: Where do Kyler Murray, the Cardinals fall after the draft?
Bidwell, 56, has had a pilot’s license since he was 19, so he has a lot of flying experience. Nonetheless, an owner flying to pick up a player is quite unique.
But Collins seemed to like it. At “Good morning football, ”Collins was asked about his ride with Bidwell, and he had nothing but good things to say about it.
“Mr. Bidwell picked me up and he was laid back and he was just like, ‘Come on, we’re going to talk about everything and you can go up and sit behind the cockpit in this little area, [but] seat belt, fasten it, “Collins said.” It was good. I have to let him talk to me about all the different instruments, talk about all the different things with the plan. You know, he’s a smart man and he knows so much about everything. “
And what was Bidwell like as a pilot? Collins had no complaints about his skills.
“It was probably one of the smoothest landings I’ve ever had,” Collins said. “He got us right on, and it felt like we were already on the ground. I didn’t even feel the wheels hit. It was crazy. I was like, man, that was absolutely brilliant.”
Collins also detailed that Bidwell took him to one of his old fields and that they got permission to bank the plane there. It’s a pretty cool extra move from Bidwell.
It looks like Collins enjoyed the opportunity to fly with Bidwell as a pilot, so maybe the Cardinals owner will make it a tradition. If he does, it could be one of the cooler perks of becoming a cardinal.
