Cardinals extend HC Kliff Kingsbury, GM Steve Keim

The Cardinals have reached new deals with head coach Kliff Kingsbury and general manager Steve Keim (Twitter link via’s Ian Rapoport). According to the team’s official announcement, Keim and Kingsbury are now under contract for the 2027 season.

“Steve and Kliff’s leadership has been a key factor in turning the team around over the past three seasons,” Cardinals owner Michael Bidwill said. “We all look forward to continuing this progress and recognize that these two individuals will play an important role in achieving our long-term goals as an organization.”

Under their leadership, the Cardinals reached the playoffs for the first time since 2015. Of course, all was not rosy in 2021 either. The Cardinals went 9-2 in the first 11 games of the season, but lost five of their last seven games, including the playoffs. For what it’s worth, Kingsbury’s collegiate and pro teams have a combined record of 42-20-1 through the first seven games of a season, and 17-45 starting in Game 8.

For its part, Bidwill believes that DeAndre Hopkins’ absence late in the season played a huge role in the Cardinals’ collapse.

“I think [the struggles are] a combination of things, certainly the impact (of Hopkins) on and off the pitch is huge,” Bidwill said (via Aaron Wilson of Pro Football Network). “And losing him not just from the X and Bones of football perspective, but also from an emotional perspective, that was huge.”

Now the Cardinals can focus on other matters this offseason, including the future of quarterback Kyler Murray. The former No. 1 overall pick missed three games with a sprained ankle and didn’t look the same afterwards. Then came the playoff game against the Rams, his worst performance of the season.

“The window has just opened for a contract extension. It is definitely part of our long-term plan,” Bidwill said recently. “Most of the big projects are finished further down the road, I think Patrick Mahomes, Josh Allen were finished over the summer. Others were made during the summer. So we have time, but it’s complicated.
